They’re taking layoffs at work, slowdowns in the economy, flare-ups in the Middle East, turnovers at headquarters, downturns in the housing market, and upswings in global warming. The plague of our day, terrorism, begins with the word terror. Fear it seems, has taken a hundred-year lease on the building next door and set up shop. Oversized and rude, fear herds us into a prison and slams the door. Wouldn’t it be great to walk out?
In his latest book, bestselling author Max Lucado asserts that it is possible to do just that. We have the key–Jesus. So why do we still insist on crouching in our cell?
One Sentence Review:
In-Depth Review
Max Lucado has crowned his already impressive list of literary accomplishments with his best inspirational title yet. Fearless cuts to the core of this epidemic spiritual plague with a sharpened edge of quick wit, artistic writing, and keen insight into the human heart.
If you struggle with fear of any kind you will find hope, comfort, and courage in the pages of this masterfully composed book, and you may want to take the experience further with the study guide at the back of the book.
Organization: Each chapter addresses a different category of fear that afflicts us today such as the fear of not mattering, fear of violence, fear of life’s final moments, and fear of global calamity. Each fear is systematically addressed, and it’s easy to skip around to a chapter that addresses the specific type of fear you want to deal with most.
Usefulness: Each chapter deals with how to combat specific types of fear, and Lucado always points to the one cure for fear that can never fail–Jesus Christ.
Accuracy: Lucado verbalizes the challenges of overcoming chronic fear with precision, insight, and compassion. While reading, it was as if he was looking into my heart and pinpointing fears I didn’t even know I had.
Writing: I have always loved Max Lucado’s voice; it seems strangely reminiscent of Dickens to me… His prose reads like poetry and it’s easy to get swept away in the perfectly placed personal stories, creative vocabulary, and witty asides.
