2016 was an amazing year for book cover design. After all, it doesn’t get any better than Dominique Falla’s stunning string art, which was featured on the cover of The Sun Is Also a Star. 2017 didn’t quite live up that level of artistic excellence, but there are still some pretty amazing designs on this year’s list. Here they are…
10. Flâneuse by Lauren Elkin
This clever gender-bending design captures the spirit of the book perfectly. And who said red and pink don’t go together?
9. The Story of Sex by Philippe Brenot
Although the book itself was a bit of a disappointment, the cover design is flawless. It was designed by Amanda Kain using Latetia Coryn’s artwork. I love how the letters are used as props for the people in the illustrations.
8. The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley by Hannah Tinti
Susan Turner designed this dark beauty. I haven’t seen a copy of the book in person and I wonder if those circles are actually cutouts in the book jacket that give readers a peek at an illustration of some kind beneath. Sylvain Neuvel’s Themis Files trilogy has a similar cutout in the jacket, which I think adds a nice three-dimensional quality to the cover.
7. A Darker Sea by James L. Haley
I love how this cover by Lucia Bernard integrates two different paintings in such a flawless way. I would buy this book just for the cover.
6. A Confusion of Languages by Siobhan Fallon
The photo Amanda Dewey chose to feature on this cover is so beautiful it hurts. I also love the typography she used.
5. An Odyssey by Daniel Mendelsohn
I don’t know who assembled the elements of this design, but according to the copyright page, the waves in the background are a pattern by Markovka and the boat graphic is by Malysh Falko. This cover reminds me of covers I’ve seen for The Odyssey, which I think was the intent.
4. The Wanderers by Meg Howrey
This book cover by Stephen Brayda is both dazzlingly beautiful and incredibly eye-catching.
3. This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel
This design by Steven Seighman isn’t the sort of thing I usually go for, but there’s something about that I just can’t ignore. Maybe it’s the bold orange and blue palette or the way the letters are half hidden behind the orange peel. Whatever it is, it really makes me want to read the book.
2. Foreign Soil by Maxine Beneba Clarke
This gorgeous cover is the work of designer and illustrator Ella Laytham. I absolutely love the bright color palette and watercolor illustration that was used to create this book cover.
1. Exit West by Mohsin Hamid
The beautiful deep-hued palette and three-dimensional feel of this book cover design by Marysarah Quinn makes it my favorite book cover of the year.
